Are you recognized as disabled in France or abroad and wish to continue salaried employment?
This article explains everything you need to know about combining your disability pension with a job.
Combining a French disability pension with salaried employment
You can combine your disability pension paid by your Social Security scheme with income from salaried work, up to a certain limit.
To determine the amount of employment income you can combine with your pension, your earnings are compared to a reference threshold, set according to the rule most favorable to you. This threshold can be calculated in two ways:
- Either the average salary earned during the last year of work before your disability, up to 1.5 times the annual Social Security ceiling (i.e., €72,090 in 2026);
- Or the average annual salary of your ten best years of work prior to the disability.
This threshold represents the overall limit not to be exceeded when combining your disability pension with professional income.
When the total of your professional income and pension exceeds the selected reference threshold, the disability pension is reduced by half of the excess amount.
It is therefore not automatically canceled but reduced proportionally.
For insured persons working in salaried employment, the Social Security organization examines income over a rolling twelve-month reference period ending two months before the control date.

Combining a Luxembourgish disability pension with salaried employment
In principle, receiving a disability pension is incompatible with engaging in professional activity in Luxembourg or abroad.
However, a disability pension recipient may work as a salaried employee, provided that their income, calculated over the year, does not exceed on average one third of the social minimum wage per month (i.e., €901.25 gross per month as of January 1, 2026).
If this limit is exceeded, the disability pension is withdrawn.

Combining a German disability pension with salaried employment
Recipients of a partial disability pension can combine it with professional activity, provided certain conditions are met.
Before starting or expanding their work, they must inform their pension insurance institution about the nature of the employment, its duration, and the expected income, as this may be taken into account when calculating the pension.
To avoid any pension reduction, income from professional activity must not exceed the following annual limits:
- Total incapacity to work: €20,763.75 maximum in 2026;
- Partial incapacity to work: €41,527.50 maximum in 2026.
In some cases, notably for partial disability pensions, a higher individual limit may apply based on the highest earnings received during the 15 years preceding the onset of incapacity for work.
Since 2024, recipients also have the possibility of a trial work period, allowing them to test returning to professional activity without jeopardizing their pension rights.

Combining a Belgian disability pension with salaried employment
It is possible to combine your disability benefits with paid employment, under certain conditions.
When you return to adapted work as a salaried employee, the amount of your basic allowance is adjusted based on your workload or percentage of employment:
- No reduction is applied if the adapted work does not exceed 1/5 of full-time (20%).
- A proportional reduction applies if the adapted work exceeds 1/5 of full-time, based on the average number of weekly hours exceeding this threshold.
Important: Before resuming adapted work, you must declare this return and obtain authorization from the advisory doctor of your mutual insurance at the latest on the working day preceding the start of the contract. The doctor will verify that the work is compatible with your disability.
